Workplace learning in the hospitality industry

Hospitality Standards Institute

The Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI) facilitates workplace learning for trainees in employment in the hospitality industry. HSI covers training in hotels, motels, other accommodation establishments, tavern and licensed clubs, restaurants, and food service premises, commercial and institutional caterers.

HSI is involved a wide range of workplace learning and associated activities within the industry, such as:

  • OASIS—Offering Assistance to Students in School
  • GlobeQual
  • Certificates of Achievement

Hospitality Association of NZ

The Hospitality Association of NZ (HANZ) works closely with HSI to improve skill levels in the hospitality industry.

  • Jobs Partnership for Industry with WINZ: a 12 week programme of selection, induction, mentoring and training. Training can be continued with HSI.
  • Seminar series: from Customer Service to Food Safety
  • National Health and Safety programme (in partnership with ACC)
  • Employment Advisory Service

Restaurant Association of New Zealand

The Restaurant Association of New Zealand offer industry scholarships to promote training and career development.

New Zealand Chefs Association

The New Zealand Chefs Association (NZCA) support a number of industry-led initiatives to promote training in cookery.

Service and Food Workers Union

The Service and Food Workers Union is the trade union which looks after the training and career interests of its members working in the hospitality industry, particularly the large hotels where much formal training takes place. SFWU is represented on the board of the Hospitality Standards Institute and involves its members in the development and review of HSI qualifications.
