Gateway: Employer factsheet
Eligibility
Gateway is available to senior secondary school students in decile 1–6 schools.
Obligations
You will need to provide an environment that is appropriate for structured workplace learning, and will need to ensure that the welfare and interests of students are protected.
You will also need to provide a safe workplace environment. However, it is the school’s responsibility to provide safety clothing and equipment to the student during their placement.
An individual training plan is developed for each student detailing the learning and unit standards to be achieved in the workplace.
The school is responsible for assessing your Gateway students’ learning. This usually occurs in the workplace.
Typically, a Gateway student would spend one day a week during the school year at your workplace.
There are no costs to you as a Gateway employer.

- If you need help or advice with taking on a Gateway student contact your Industry Training Organisation, professional association or the Tertiary Education Commission.
- Interview the interested students.
- Work with the school to develop a learning plan that provides the student with real learning experiences within your business or organisation.
